SEBI’s New “@valid” UPI Handle: Making Your Payments Safer & Smarter
India’s securities market has taken a major leap toward secure and transparent investing.
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has rolled out two new initiatives — Validated UPI Handles (@valid) and SEBI Check — designed to protect investors from fraudulent transactions and ensure every payment goes only to SEBI-registered intermediaries.
What Are “Validated UPI Handles”?
Until now, when investors made UPI payments to brokers or mutual funds, it wasn’t always clear if the UPI ID belonged to a genuine SEBI-registered entity. That gap led to several fraud cases over time.
To solve this, SEBI and NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) have introduced “@valid” UPI handles — a verified tag that confirms your payment is going to an authentic, registered intermediary.
Every SEBI-registered broker, mutual fund, or other intermediary will now have a UPI handle ending with @valid, such as:
➡️ abc.brk@validhdfc for brokers
➡️ xyz.mf@validicici for mutual funds
This ensures complete payment transparency and investor safety.
How Will You Identify a Genuine “@valid” Handle?
When you initiate a UPI payment to an entity with a @valid handle, you’ll notice a green thumbs-up icon inside a triangle.
This icon confirms that the UPI ID is validated by SEBI.
If you don’t see the icon, it means the payment request isn’t verified — and you should not proceed.
It’s a simple, powerful step that brings real-time verification directly to your payment screen.
What Is “SEBI Check”?
Alongside @valid handles, SEBI has launched SEBI Check — a tool that lets you independently verify whether a bank account number or UPI ID belongs to a registered intermediary.
It works across payment methods — UPI, NEFT, RTGS, IMPS — and allows you to confirm details instantly.
🔗 You can access SEBI Check here:
Or through the SEBI Saarthi App on your smartphone.
Just enter the bank account number or UPI ID, and the system will tell you whether it’s linked to a SEBI-registered entity.
Who Has Adopted It So Far?
✅ Over 90% of brokers in India have already adopted the @valid handle.
✅ All mutual funds are now using it.
✅ More intermediaries are in the process of integrating it soon.
This means that very soon, most investor payments in India’s securities market will go through SEBI-validated channels only.
Key Benefits of SEBI’s New Initiatives
1. Fraud Prevention: Investors can instantly detect fake or unverified UPI IDs.
2. Transparency: All SEBI-registered intermediaries are clearly identifiable.
3. Safety: Payments go through regulated, verified channels only.
4. Confidence: Investors can verify every transaction before paying.
Why This Matters
Online investing is booming — but with it, so are digital payment scams.
SEBI’s move brings in a much-needed layer of trust and accountability to digital transactions.
By ensuring that every UPI handle carrying “@valid” is regulated and traceable, SEBI is helping safeguard your investments and your peace of mind.
Whenever you make a payment to your broker or mutual fund —
✔️ Look for @valid in the UPI ID
✔️ Check for the green thumbs-up icon
✔️ Verify the details using SEBI Check
If all three match — your payment is secure, genuine, and protected.
